Charges filed in hit-and-run incident

Charges are pending against a 27-year-old man who police say allegedly was behind the wheel of a hit-and-run incident last month in the Three Rivers Meijer parking lot.

Three Rivers Det. Sam Smallcombe said a warrant request was submitted Friday to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s office regarding charges against Thomas Stambaugh.

Stambaugh could face charges of driving on a suspended license causing death and leaving the scene of a fatal accident.

The incident occurred June 18. The victim was 62-year-old Laura Jacobs of Three Rivers.

Authorities said Stambaugh is in the St. Joseph County Jail on a charge of absconding from parole in an unrelated case.

Members of the Michigan State Police Fugitive Team took him into custody July 17 at a residence on Featherstone Road in Constantine Township, authorities said.
