Constantine prom canceled, graduation planned

Constantine High School officials have decided to cancel prom, though the district is moving forward with a graduation ceremony Friday.

Kathy Jo Tully, a teacher at the high school and prom coordinator, said the committee made arrangements for the July 30 prom in early June, when COVID- 19 cases appeared to be declining and the state of Michigan was on track to reopen.

The trend changed, however, over the course of the following month, prompting the cancellation.

Tully said heeding advice from the local health department, Michigan Department of Education and other entities, the prom was canceled.

The district is proceeding with plans for a socially-distanced graduation ceremony, an event students assisted in planning.

The ceremony is scheduled for 6 p.m. It will include a parade, culminating in a commencement ceremony at the high school parking lot and receiving of diplomas.

Students who purchased prom tickets will have their money refunded.
