Local July 4th celebrations canceled

The villages of Colon and Schoolcraft have canceled their fireworks and Fourth of July festivities this year.

In Colon, however, a longstanding tradition will continue this weekend.

The 14th annual “Palmer Lake Flotilla” is set to take place at 6 p.m. Saturday. Rain date is 1 p.m. Sunday.

Seasonal resident Tim Taylor has served as coordinator and commodore of the Palmer Lake Flotilla since 2013. He joked that by the nature of the Flotilla, participants have been social distancing since its beginning.

This year’s theme is “Holidays.” Participants will decorate their pontoon, deck or fishing boats with the theme of a popular holiday.

Entry fee for the flotilla is $10. Register by contacting Taylor at 773-383-7892 or by email at: palmerlakeflotilla@att.com.

Proceeds from the event are donated to Colon American Legion post 454.
