Palmer Lake Flotilla raised funds for Colon American Legion

Several traditional and ethnic holidays were celebrated as part of the holiday-themed Palmer Lake Flotilla in Colon.

The 80-minute parade on the Fourth of July circled Palmer Lake for hundreds of families who lined the shore to cheer on 23 entrants, the biggest Flotilla in terms of participation, said event organizer Tim Taylor.

First place was awarded to Ryan Doherty and Grant Sahr, with their St. Patrick’s Day-themed entry.

Second place went to the Franklin and Watts families for a Chinese New Year-themed entry, featuring an elaborately decorated dancing Chinese dragon.

Third-place recipients were Linda Rehmeyer, Jean Ann Murphy and Mike Smoker, for their Mickey and Minnie Mouse Christmas.

Jim Crawford and family won “Best Shoreline” display with a Peanuts-themed holiday shoreline, including “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” “The Great Pumpkin” and Peanuts Thanksgiving.

Proceeds from the event were donated to Colon American Legion post 454.
