Road commission approves road conversion policy

A policy for the conversion of private roads to public roads was approved last month by the St. Joseph County Road Commission.

Managing director John Lindsey said the agency fields questions regularly from people inquiring about converting roads.

He explained requirements and specifications guarantee that roads constructed in accordance with them will require a minimum of maintenance costs. In addition, to guarantee road users maximum assurance that with reasonable maintenance, roads must be usable throughout the year.

Under the policy, requests to incorporate existing private roads into the road commission’s public system must be in writing and accompanied by a plan-review fee. The road commission then will determine that it may or may not be possible for the agency to assume ownership of the roads.

If the determination is that it may be a possibility, commission staff will examine the road.
