TRCS plans for new school year

Members of the Three Rivers Community Schools Board of Education this week were provided an update on the start of the district’s school year.

Curriculum director Nikki Nash said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s “Return to School Road Map” was reviewed as a guide for suggestions and requirements public schools are advised to follow in advance of classes resuming this fall.

The review took place with the district’s instructional team, she said. Ultimately, four scenarios were identified based on which of six phases the state is in at the time the school year would begin.

Only at Phase 6 would the district conduct traditional, face-to-face classes. Phases 4 or 5 would feature a mix of remote-learning and face-to-face instruction based on a modified daily schedule.

Phases 3, 2 or 1 would most likely result in remote learning, Nash said.

The use of a face covering for students and/or staff is also a matter to be decided as the start of school approaches. It would depend largely on which phase the region is in at the time, Nash added.

Other potential scenarios would include lunch served in classrooms and putting a limit on the number of students in hallways at any given time.

Superintendent Ron Moag said he anticipates more re-opening information at some point next week.
