River cleanup postponed

The St. Joseph County Conservation District has decided to postpone its final river cleanup event of the 2020 season.

Originally scheduled for Saturday, the final cleanup was to take place on a stretch of the Pigeon River from Blue School Road to Vistula Road in Mottville Township.

Shaun Grace, river cleanup coordinator, said the Pigeon River is not an ideal route at this time because of its low water volume and an exceptional number of downed trees.

Grace said the revised date is Sept. 3, a Wednesday. The location, however, will be determined. It will start at 10 a.m., and return transportation, a kayak or canoe, life preserver and lunch will be provided.

Anyone wishing to volunteer is asked to call the agency no later than a day before the scheduled event in order for organizers to secure the correct number of canoes and kayaks, as well as have an accurate lunch count.
