Constantine Village Council discusses speed limit petition

Residents of Jeremy Lane in Constantine’s Falcon Cove subdivision submitted a petition requesting the village consider reducing the neighborhood’s speed limit of 25 mph to 15.

It also requested the village put an additional speed limit sign on the northbound lane as drivers enter from Timm Road.

The request was discussed at Monday’s village council meeting. Village manager Mark Honeysett said there is a formula for setting a speed limit, and a local government cannot arbitrarily set the limit.

He contacted MDOT, which said the process is not complex and begins with a traffic survey by Michigan State Police. He also contacted state police but learned results of the survey will not reduce the speed limit.

Honeysett asked the village’s DPW to place a speed trailer on Jeremy Lane as a reminder to motorists and said he would direct village police to conduct radar enforcement.
