Multiple arrests in drug smuggling investigation

Three people, including a juvenile, were arrested following a multi-jurisdiction investigation into drug smuggling at Lakeland Correctional Facility in Coldwater.

State police said the investigation included representatives from Department of Corrections, the state police drug-enforcement team S.W.E.T., state police aviation unit, state police canine, Michigan DNR and canine officers from the Branch County Sheriff’s Department.

Authorities said the department of corrections uncovered a plot to smuggle drugs into the prison this past Saturday. An investigation was initiated and officers – using resources such as canine officers and the state polices drone – subsequently took into custody two adults and a juvenile.

A 33-year-old woman, her 15-year-old daughter and a 20-year-old man all from Adrian were arrested.

The adults face multiple felony charges. Meanwhile, charges will be requested through Family Court for the juvenile’s role. She has been turned over to the custody of a family member.

The investigation also revealed the involvement of several prisoners currently serving time at Lakeland Correctional. Authorities said charges will also be sought for those individuals.
