Board members of the St. Joseph County Road Commission received good news during their meeting Wednesday.
Garrett Myland, assistant manager/engineer, said the agency was awarded $760,000 from the Southwest Michigan Bridge Council. The multi-county council fielded more than $42 million in requests from its members and had about $4 million available to award to more than half a dozen counties in Southwest Michigan.
Myland said the money will go toward a $2 million plan to overhaul the Langley Covered Bridge in the summer of 2023. The funding complements $750,000 the agency secured from the state, road commission manager John Lindsey said.
The road commission has allocated $300,000 to the project, which will focus on a full replacement of the bridge’s deck and its under-bridge support foundation.
