Man injured in motorcycle crash

Speed may have been a factor in a personal-injury incident over the weekend in Cass County’s Penn Township.

Sheriff Richard Behnke said deputies were called at 8 p.m. Sunday to the intersection of Dutch Settlement Road and East Street in response to a motorcycle involved in a crash.

Central dispatch received a 9-1-1 call regarding a subject walking up a driveway in the 16000 block of Marcellus Highway but left in an unknown direction. K-9 Faust tracked the subject hiding in a thick, wooded area approximately about a quarter mile away.

The driver, Travis Herman, 28, of Marcellus, was found lying in a ditch and suffering an obvious head injury. He said he was traveling east on Dutch Settlement Road when his motorcycle ran off the roadway and struck a grove of trees.

The driver was transported to South Bend Memorial Hospital. Authorities said Herman was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident.
