Out and About – Week of October 12th

This Friday, October 16, is National Bosses Day here in the USA and Canada. Do something special for your boss, find a babysitter and take her out to dinner.

When getting Out and About lately, I’ve noticed quite a few squirrels busy stashing away a winter’s supply of nuts. It amazes me how animals are aware of the change of seasons. Talking about squirrels reminds me that we should all be more decisive. Right or wrong, make a decision. The road of life is paved with flat squirrels who couldn’t make a decision.

There are plenty of sports fans who have made the decision to boycott all NFL football games. Each fan has their reason for deciding not to watch a game. I enjoy football, but prefer watching a good college game. I’ll be glad when the Big Ten teams are back on the gridiron. They don’t play for the money, but rather for the possibility of perhaps someday going pro. I am a big fan of the Green Bay Packers for two reasons. Aaron Rodgers is fascinating to watch and Vince Lombardi was one heck of a coach. I have two quotes from Lombardi that I’d like to share, because they are very true:

“The man on top of the mountain didn’t fall there.”
“The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will.”
Several years ago I had gallbladder surgery. Since that time I’ve had to pay more attention to my eating habits. I try to stay away from spicy foods. My gallbladder used to help with digestion and now my stomach has to do all the work. Periodically I do suffer from heartburn and indigestion. I’ve learned that there are some cures that work if taken early enough.

Eat a banana at the first sign of gastric distress. The banana contains natural antacids, which can provide fast relief if you have a sensitive stomach and suffer from heartburn pain.
If you are prone to heartburn, there are some foods you might want to stay away from. These would include chocolate, alcohol, citrus fruits, tomatoes and caffeine. The best thing to do is not to overeat and keep your weight under control.
Chew sugarless gum after eating. This increases the production of saliva, which dilutes stomach acid and reduces heartburn symptoms. This also sweetens your breath.
Kudos to the Three Rivers Lions Club. Just before the end of September, the Lions offered a special drive-thru service at the Lions Service Center on Sixth Avenue in Three Rivers. We all look forward to attending the annual Ox Roast during the Three Rivers Water Festival. As you all know the Water Festival was canceled this year due to Covid-19. This did not stop the Lions from having their own Ox Roast at the Service Center. The event was a great success. The food was delicious, as usual, and the Lions Club was able to make a few dollars, which will go directly back into the community, providing relief for those in need. It was a win-win event for everyone.

It is nice to see more and more people doing as they have been advised and wearing face-masks when Out and About. I have noticed a couple of things that seem odd. There are some who just don’t wear a mask at all. That is their decision. There are some who wear a mask, but don’t cover their nose. That is also their decision. There are others who wear a mask as they enter a store, then they remove the mask while they shop. When I am Out and About in a store or restaurant, I wear the mask anytime I am up and moving about. I remove the mask once I step outside. To each his own. If I see you Out and About and don’t acknowledge you, I’m not ignoring you, but like so many others, I just don’t recognize you and I’m usually in a hurry to get out of there and get home where I feel safer.

See you Out and About!
