Joe Shinn, 93

Joe R. Shinn, age 93, of Shipshewana, passed away holding his wife’s hand on Tuesday, December 22, 2020. He was born in Sturgis on December 20, 1927 to the late Clyde and Ester Shinn.  Joe proudly joined the Navy during World War II and served in the Philippines when the war ended 6 weeks later. Joe worked in Sturgis at Harter Corporation where he showcased his artistic side with catalog illustrations, he then went on to Sturgis Paneling before retiring from Ross Laboratories in 1992.

Joe had a passion for family and friends that included spending weekends in the family pool, golfing on several leagues, camping with grandchildren and hosting card club. He also loved to travel and was blessed to tour overseas several times with family as well as exploring the United States.

Joe was best known for his kindness and compassion.  He was never a stranger to anyone and was loved by his community.

Joe is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Katie Shinn; his daughters, Jabeth (Mike) Wheeler and Janel (Jerry) Jones; stepchildren, Harlan (Deb) Kauffman and Harlene (Tom) Barta; grandchildren, Paula, Shauna, Heather, Sean, Will, Sydney, Hayden and Luke; and great – grandchildren, Zakk, Ridgely, Harrison, Aniston, Joel and Miles.

He was preceded in death by his first wife of over 50 years, Beth Shinn; and his siblings, Jimmy, Delight, Majorie and Billy.
