Sturgis Area Community Foundation has announced recipients of its 2020 competitive grant awards, funding that amounts to more than $100,000.
Representing nonprofit and charitable agencies was St. Joseph County Council for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect. The council will receive funding to provide “Welcome Home’ baby bags to new parents.
CASA of Southwest Michigan was another recipient. With grant funding for Court Appointed Special Advocates of Southwest Michigan, funding is used to improve outcomes and give some of the county’s most vulnerable children the support they require.
Next was Sturgis Helping Hands. For 11 years, its backpack program provides backpacks of food and essentials that ensure students in need have access to meals on weekends and during the holiday season.
Also, grant funding will support the installation of an outdoor public fireplace in downtown Sturgis and contribute to the overall goal of creating a sense of place in the community. The fireplace is part of a place-making strategy.
Finally, Sturges-Young Center for the Arts, which has served the cultural community for more than 50 years. Grant funds from the foundation will provide new acoustic panels to improve sound quality.
