Barbara J. Vernon, age 98, of Plainwell, and a former resident of Sturgis, went to her heavenly home Sunday morning, Jan. 10, 2021, at her home.
She was a Christmas baby, born Dec. 25, 1922, in Genesee County, a daughter of the late Frank and Enola (Dieck) Moore.
Mrs. Vernon resided in Plainwell since 2014. She moved to Sturgis in 1955, coming from Flushing.
On Feb. 21, 1942, she married Bruce W. Vernon in Flushing. He preceded her in death Nov. 9, 2002.
Mrs. Vernon retired from the Gravi-Flo Corporation in Sturgis following several years of dedicated employment as the company switchboard operator. She also worked five years as a deputy with the St. Joseph County Sherriff’s Department.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, gardening and loved playing bingo and cards.
She is survived by three daughters, Carole (Michael) Darby of Richland, Kathryn Long of Plainwell and Janet Vernon of Plainwell; a daughter-in law, Debra (Denison) Vernon; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bruce; a son, Thomas Vernon; a sister, Phyllis Dyball; and a brother, Wayne Moore.
In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. No services are planned at this time.
Hackman Family Funeral Homes of Sturgis is entrusted with arrangements.
