Sturgis Planning Commission considers new Dollar General

The first step toward bringing a new Dollar General store to Sturgis was taken last week by members of the Sturgis Planning Commission.

The board accepted a site-plan review by Midwest V LLC for the proposed store, which is slated for the 1300 block of North Nottawa Street.

The proposed development requires recommendation by the planning commission and subsequent approval from the city commission.

Midwest V has been collaborating with Michigan Department of Transportation regarding placement of the driveway, set to be located on the southern side of the lot to avoid traffic concerns coming into and out of Tawelfan Apartments across the street.

Resident Matt Craven asked the board about the lighting of the store property. He explained he lives near another Dollar General elsewhere in St. Joseph County, and that night illumination is a distraction to him as a rural property owner.
