Al Bumann, 94

Albert Dale Bumann, age 94, of Sturgis, passed away peacefully Tuesday evening, Feb. 23, 2021, at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo.
He was born March 7, 1926, in Schleswig, Iowa, a son of the late William and Johanna Bumann.
Mr. Bumann had resided in Sturgis since 1948. His early life was spent in Iowa, where he worked on the family farm. The farming caused Al to leave school early, but he later went back to night school, earning his GED, and was named valedictorian of his class.
On June 15, 1947, he married Helene Flossie Pappas at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis, by the Rev. William Schalm.
Most of Albert’s working life was in the tool & die industry. At age 82, he retired from Sturgis Tool & Die, where he had spent most of his career.
Mr. Bumann was a dedicated active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis, where he served on numerous boards, served as an usher and elder and was always involved in the church extension.
He was proud to have served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1952-1956, earning the rank of Sergeant.
Al had an appreciation for the outdoors and truly enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially while sharing those times with his son and friends. He also had a love for football and was an avid fan of the Detroit Lions.
He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of 73 years, Helene; a daughter, Emily Diana Frohriep of Sturgis; a son, Albert Dale Bumann Jr. of Sturgis; his grandpaws Thunder, Princess, Oliver, Max, Lucy, Lyza and Angel; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, John Cassens, Henry Cassens, George Cassens, Robert Bumann and LeRoy Bumann; and six sisters, Katheran Schwartz, Hattie Susie, Marie Swantz, Margarite Hess, Lillian Reese and Minnie Hess.
There will be no visitation. Funeral services celebrating and honoring the life of Albert D. Bumann will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis. The Revs. Larry Matro and Calvin Kolzow will officiate. A graveside committal will follow the service at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis. Full military honors will be conferred by Captain John J. Kelley Post #1355 VFW and the U.S. Air Force Honor Guards.
