Charles Schrader, age 72, of Centreville, passed away unexpectedly Thursday afternoon, Feb. 4, 2021, at his home.
He was born Dec. 19, 1948, in Sturgis, a son of the late Charles A. and Oretta Caroline (Krontz) Schrader.
Chuck lived most of his life in the Centreville area, where he was a graduate of Centreville High School with the class of 1967. While in high school, he excelled in athletics, especially the game of baseball. His love of sports didn’t end with his high school career. For many years, he coached baseball and softball and sponsored several baseball and softball teams.
On Aug. 18, 1967, he married Linda VanScoik. They were together for 27 years. For the past 25 years, he has shared his life with his soul mate, Faythe Graber Schrader.
He had worked at several area trailer factories and at Kirsch Company in Sturgis for 10 years and for many years he owned and operated Schrader Fur Company. Chuck was a talented and successful professional bass fisherman for more than 30 years, competing in tournaments throughout the United States and Canada. A few of his longtime sponsors included Ranger Boats, D&R Sports and Zoom Bait Company.
Chuck had a true love and appreciation for the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, mushroom-hunting, going to auctions, gardening and cooking, especially if he could share the food with friends and family. He also loved shopping for his wife, daughters and granddaughters.
He is survived by his wife, Faythe Graber Schrader; his children, Charles A. Schrader of Centreville, Amy Lyn (Bruce) Weller of Battle Creek, Douglas (Haven) Schrader of Homer, Kelley (Jason) Moore of Plainwell, Ben “BJ” Clark of Constantine and Autumn (Brock) Salmen of Centreville; 14 grandchildren; a great-grandson; two sisters, Mary (Ronald) Davis of Iron River and Leslie (James) Pappas of Sturgis; a brother, Jimmie (Betty) Schrader of Centreville; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters and their husbands, Edith and Ray Davis and Ola and Charles Player.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Radiant Life Church, 907 N. Nottawa St., Sturgis. Funeral services celebrating the life of Charles Schrader will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Due to conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic, masks are required and social-distancing will be observed. A graveside committal will follow the service at Locust Grove Cemetery in Burr Oak.
