Glen Oaks student wins young farmers competition

Sophia Ryan, a sophomore at Glen Oaks Community College and Michigan State University Institute of Agricultural Technology majoring in agricultural operations, competed last month in the Michigan Farm Bureau Collegiate Young Farmers Discussion Meet.

To compete, Ryan videotaped a 10-minute response to an agricultural-related question. She was selected as a top-four finalist in the state. Ryan then competed in a virtual discussion representing Glen Oaks and Michigan State University.

She was named winner of that competition.

In March, Ryan will compete in the National Farm Bureau Federation’s Collegiate Young Farmers Discussion Meet, representing the state of Michigan.

Ryan is an alumna of Sturgis High School. After completing her degree at Glen Oaks Community College, she plans to transfer to Michigan State University to continue her education in animal embryonic and genetic studies and veterinary medicine.
