Mendon woman dies when vehicle goes into river

A Mendon woman died Thursday after the vehicle she was driving left the roadway and plunged into the Fawn River.

Sheriff Mark Lillywhite said deputies were called shortly after 7 a.m. to Constantine Road at the Fawn River bridge, located on the border of Constantine and Florence townships.

Lillywhite said the vehicle, a 2007 Jeep Liberty, was found upside down and completely submerged in about seven feet of water.

Constantine fire personnel located and removed the victim from the vehicle. She was transported to Three Rivers Health, where she was pronounced deceased.

Investigators said the driver, 60-year-old Barbara Phillips, was traveling north on Constantine Road when her vehicle veered off the roadway to the left, hit the bridge retaining wall, overturned and landed in the river.

Lillywhite said it is not known at this time what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway.
