A Michigan man is accused of backing a van into a northern Indiana city’s fire department building after he first tried unsuccessfully to crash it into a nearby police building.
James Campbell of Edwardsburg, faces felony charges of resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, auto theft and operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, The Elkhart Truth reported
Campbell, 34, was arrested Friday following a police pursuit that ended when a Dodge Grand Caravan he was driving struck a flagpole and a utility pole. During that chase, police said the van struck a car, sending its driver and a juvenile passenger to the hospital with injuries.
The chase began after Campbell allegedly backed the van into the front doors of the Elkhart Fire Department, damaging the building’s metal door frames and shattering a window next to the door, causing an estimated $5,000 in damage.
Security cameras from the Elkhart Police Department showed that before the van struck the fire department building Campbell had tried two times, unsuccessfully, to crash the van into the police building.
Police learned that the van had been reported as stolen to police in Niles, Michigan. The van’s owner said Campbell was a friend who took the vehicle on Thursday as she was sleeping.
Campbell was being held Tuesday at the Elkhart County Correctional Facility on a $10,000 bond. Online court documents do not list an attorney who could speak on his behalf. (AP)
