A decades-long Three Rivers resident has been selected to oversee the St. Joseph County Transportation Authority.
After serving since October as interim executive director of the Three Rivers-based agency, Allen Balog has accepted the position on a permanent basis. Balog’s agreement with the CTA board was formalized last week.
During his 10-year stint as a county commissioner, Balog served the entire decade as the commission’s representatives on the CTA board. In hindsight, Balog said, that was critical experience that probably worked in his favor over the other 10 applicants vying for the $65,000-a-year job.
An insurance agent most of his adult life, Balog said he is giving up that profession to maintain his focus on the CTA and its roster of 40 employees.
Prior to his term on the county board, the 61-year-old Balog served as mayor of Three Rivers for four years.
The CTA operates on an annual budget of about $2.3 million.
