Out and About – Week of March 8th

A reminder to set your clocks ahead one hour before going to bed this next Saturday night. Yes, you lose one hour of sleep, but the days are getting longer, which means you’ll be able to get Out and About, and stay out to enjoy more daylight activities.

I’m not sure if March came in like a lion or a lamb. I do know that we have been blessed with more than a few sunny days with temperatures in the forties. This is March, so don’t be too surprised if we get hit with at least one more snow storm. I still have gasoline in my snow blower, so we probably won’t have any more measurable snow.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Domestic and Sexual Abuse Services (DSAS) is selling shirts and sweatshirts during the month of March. The purpose of this campaign is to help spread awareness about the evil of Sexual Abuse and Sexual Assault. All proceeds from the sale of the shirts will go to helping meet the needs of victims and survivors. For information on this problem and how to go about purchasing the items, please visit www.bonfire.com/believe-survivors-end-the-silence.

Thanks to modern technology, fewer children are enjoying the experience of reading a real book. To help cure this and encourage pre-schoolers to enjoy the adventure of reading, the Three Rivers Public Library is offering a program called “1000 Books Before Kindergarten”. Children who complete this program will receive a certificate, plus a $5 gift card from Lowry’s Books and More. If you think your child might enjoy this, go to www.threeriverslibrary.org/kids-teens/1000-books-before-kindergarten.

If you’re retired with time on your hands, you might seriously think about volunteering. There are many civic organizations you can join right here in St. Joe County. There are also at least six Human Services Taskforces that are always in need of volunteers. Here are six groups to choose from.. I’m listing the names of the chair people and their e-mail addresses. Please give this some thought, then get yourself involved. Remember, volunteer, the world is run by those who show up.

They are asking for donations of personal care/hygiene items to fill the baskets. Donations will be accepted Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9AM – 2 PM. On Wednesday, March 31, the baskets will be filled and delivered with assistance from members of Hice-Shutes American Legion Post #170.
