A steering committee is being created to help decide how St. Joseph County will spend its share of a $1.9 trillion federal government incentive.
During their executive committee meeting Wednesday, county commissioners discussed the impending payment arriving through the American Rescue Plan.
Though the anticipated amount has not been disclosed by county officials, it’s expected to be significant enough to warrant the attention of the new committee.
County administrator Teresa Doehring said establishing a steering committee or a group approach to try to begin strategizing, discussing and setting parameters and priorities would be a prudent course of action.
She suggested the panel initially be comprised of herself, two commissioner representatives, finance director Angie Steinman and treasurer Kathy Humphreys.
Doehring said she would like to see the proposed group stage its inaugural meeting within the next two weeks.
