Sturgis – Tree City USA

A partnership involving Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the Arbor Day Foundation has declared a St. Joseph County community a “Tree City USA” honoree for 2020.

The city of Sturgis was announced as one of 124 Michigan communities to receive the honor.

The certification is for work accomplished during 2020. All recipients will receive their reward by the end of the month.

Tree City USA promotes proper care and management of community trees and calls attention to the multiple benefits they provide, according to Arbor Day Foundation officials.

Its four standards created for consideration of Tree City USA status are: a city department or tree board, a public tree-care ordinance, a community forestry program with an annual budget of at least $2 per capita and a proclamation centering on Arbor Day.

Arbor Day 2021 is April 30.
