Bert A. Smallwood, age 63, of Bronson, passed away on Saturday, May 15, 2021 at the Edgewood Rehab & Nursing Facility in Three Rivers.
He was born Feb. 15, 1958 in McDowell, KY a son to the late Arthur James and Nevil (Johnson) Smallwood.
On Jan. 17, 1978 in Clintwood, Virginia he married Sharon K. Heltzel.
He had been employed at Haskins Farms, the Mushroom Farm, and most recently was employed by Morgan Olson for over 20 years until his failing health forced him to retire.
Bert enjoyed watching NASCAR, being outdoors, fishing, working on the side as a free-lance auto mechanic. He also enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren and hanging out with family at the Smallwood Camp.
Surviving are his wife: Sharon; 2 sons: Jeremy (Rebecca) Smallwood of Burr Oak, and Justin (Courtney) Smallwood of Williamsport, Maryland; 1 daughter: Jami (Ricky) Hull of Charlotte; 11 grandchildren: Bryice, Caleb, Ashton, Raychel, Breanna, Benjamin, Eli, Justice, Grant, Mariah, and Elizabeth; 7 sisters: Verna Gitt of Goodyear, AZ, Sandra Moore of Bronson, Glema (Tim) Norris of Bronson, Birdenna (Rich) Smith of LaGrange, and Angie (George) Jenkot of Howe, Paula (Matt) Hile of Kendallville, and Marsha (Al) Wyer of Sturgis; 5 brothers: Morris (Sharon) Smallwood of LaGrange, Augusta (Julie) Smallwood of Wonewoc, WI, Karl (Kendra) Smallwood of Kendallville, Dale (Cathy) Smallwood of Mongo, IN, and Wendall (Tammy) Smallwood of Bronson; a sister-in-law: Melvie Smallwood of Louisa, KY; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother: Hugh Smallwood; 2 brother-in-laws: Wayne Gitt and Worm Moore.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 1:00 to 3:00 on Saturday, May 22, 2021 at the Pleasant Hill Church, 886 Pleasant Hill Road, Bronson, MI 49028. Services celebrating the life of Bert A. Smallwood will be held at 3:00 PM, Saturday, immediately following the visitation at the church with Pastor Ricky Hull, officiating.
Interment and graveside services will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Memorial donations may be directed to the Pleasant Hill Church or Youth for Christ – Campus Life, envelopes are available at the church of the Hackman Family Funeral Homes of Sturgis who have been entrusted with the arrangements.
