Literacy challenge winner joins LaSata as junior senator for the day

State Sen. Kim LaSata welcomed her March is Reading Month literacy challenge winner Aaleyah Tomorrow to the Capitol on Thursday to serve alongside her as junior senator for the day.

“It was great to have Aaleyah and her family join me at the Capitol today and to have her serve alongside me as a junior senator,” said LaSata, R-Coloma. “It was an action-packed day for Aaleyah — I hope that it was not only a great learning experience for her, but fun also.”

As part of her activities as junior senator, Tomorrow took a ceremonial oath of office, attended Senate and House legislative sessions and a hearing of the Senate Committee on Economic and Small Business Development, and received an official tour of the Capitol.

Tomorrow, who won the challenge by reading 207 books, is a third grade student at Norton Elementary School in Three Rivers.

“I am truly impressed with Aaleyah’s efforts, not only in reading 207 books to win the challenge, but with her focus and engagement on academic success at such a young age,” LaSata said. “I wish her all the best as she continues her education and am confident she can achieve anything she puts her mind to.”

All K-8 students residing in Berrien, Cass and St. Joseph counties were eligible to participate by submitting titles of books they read throughout March.
