Man arrested in hit-and-run case

A Sturgis-area man has been charged with second-degree murder following his arrest stemming from a hit-and-run fatal collision last month in Branch County’s Sherwood Township.

Authorities said Daniel Silich, 42, was arrested Wednesday. Investigators said he was the driver of a car that struck 13-year-old Landen Risner and injured his 6-year-old brother and 13-year-old sister. The three were on bicycles when the April 5 collision occurred.

Authorities said Silich faces additional charges of manslaughter with a motor vehicle, failure to stop at an accident causing death and reckless driving causing death.

Silich, who lives in Burr Oak Township, left the scene but was identified a day later thanks to a citizen’s tip. Risner, meanwhile, died six days after the collision.

A probable cause hearing is set for May 13, with a preliminary examination set to follow on May 19.
