National Day of Prayer observed with local event

National Day of Prayer was observed locally Thursday, thanks to the efforts of a small group of parishioners from Firm Foundation Ministries.

The hour-long program took place around the gazebo on the grounds of the St. Joseph County Courthouse.

Vicki Allen, Marlene Hagerman, Barbara Kwiatkowski and Mary Ellen Smith were instrumental in putting together the lineup that featured prayers related to seven specific components. It also included music and a devotional.

Allen said she estimated about 50 people attended.

The service was open to people of all religions and centered on prayer for what is comprised of Mountains of Influence: family, religion, business, politics, education, media and the arts.

The seven are considered to be cultures that mold the way people think, and influences lives on a daily basis, Allen said.

Established 70 years ago, National Day of Prayer is always held the first Thursday in May.
