Next Monday, May 31, is Memorial Day. We should all show our pride and fly the American flag everyday, but if you don’t, you should do so especially on Memorial Day. It is a day we pay tribute to those men and women of our Armed Forces who have paid the ultimate price for their country. If you do fly Old Glory, I tip my hat to you, if you don’t show your pride in our country in this way. Next Monday would be a great time to start.
The Hice-Shutes American Legion Post #170, here in Three Rivers, has 3×5 American flags in stock. For a $30 donation, you can be a true American and show the colors. The flags are in short stock, but we can always order more. We also have a flag box at the Legion, where you can place your old and tattered flags for proper disposal. The Legion is located at 59990 South Main. We’re at the corner of M-86 and Lutz Road.
Stress, of any type, is part of just about everyone’s life these days. We all have our problems and if we let our problems work on us, we can become stressed out quite easily. Here are ten ways to reduce some of that stress. I want to thank Jennifer Campbell, of “Health & Fitness”, for these ideas:
Exercise regularly. Studies have shown that those who exercise regularly, experience lower levels of anxiety and depression than those who do not.
Get some rest. Prolonged stress levels have been associated with poor sleep and impaired memory. Meditation and patterned breathing can help reduce anxiety and improve sleep.
Focus on antioxidants. Eating an antioxidant-rich diet can help increase your blood antioxidant levels to fight oxidative stress and reduce the risk of heart disease and some cancers.
Cut caffeine. High doses of the stimulant, found in coffee, tea and energy drinks, can lead to anxiety. Consider swapping that extra cup of coffee for an antioxidant-rich green tea.
Start a hobby. Research has shown that people with hobbies have lower levels of stress and depression. Group activities, like team sports, can improve your communication skills and relationships with others.
Try aromatherapy. Lighting a candle or using essential oils can help elevate your mood.
Start a journal. Putting things in writing is a cathartic way to ease your mind.
Laugh. It’s difficult to feel anxious when you’re laughing, and it can even improve immune function in the long term. Watch a movie, or spend time with those who make you laugh.
Just say no. Volunteering can increase happiness, but too many responsibilities can lead to feeling overwhelmed and guilty.
Cuddle. Positive physical contact, including cuddling, kissing and hugging, can help relieve stress by releasing oxytocin and lowering cortisol. Even cuddling with pets provides a sense of comfort and companionship.
