Two arrested in Cass County theft case

Two people were arrested in connection to the theft of items from a barn in Cass County’s Jefferson Township.

Cass County Sheriff Richard Behnke said deputies were called around 2 a.m. Monday after an Edwardsburg officer came across a suspicious vehicle towing a golf cart on M-62 near Oil City Road. The vehicle sped up, leading the officer on a chase.

Behnke said the golf cart crashed on Oil City Road and the van continued until it crashed into a trailer at Eagle Lake Estates in Ontwa Township. The 49-year-old male driver and 35-year-old female passenger took off on foot. The driver was apprehended in a shed approximately 100 yards away and the passenger was later found.

The 36-year-old subject in the golf cart also took off on foot and was apprehended by Cass County K9 “Faust.” Investigators said it was discovered the golf cart was stolen, along with other items that were eventually recovered.

The two men were arrested; charges against the female are expected to be filed this week.
