Out and About – Week of June 28th

Just about every one has a cell-phone these days. I carry mine in a pouch on my belt. It’s pretty handy, except when I wear my shirt outside my pants. I miss quite a few calls, because it takes me a few seconds to lift my shirt, undo the Velcro and get the phone out. Many people, mostly young girls, carry their phone in their back pocket. This results in an occasional “Butt Call”.

St. Joseph County Central Dispatch recently issued a PSA (Public Service Announcement). It seems they have been receiving quite a few 9-1-1 calls by accident. The usual excuse is “I didn’t mean to call” or “I bumped my Apple Watch”. Hey, accidents happen. If you do call 9-1-1 in error, please do not hang up the phone until someone answers, then explain what happened. If you just hang up the phone, the chances are that Dispatch will use GPS locators to try and find the caller. They could easily dispatch the police, or sheriff’s department to make sure you’re okay. Doing this wastes precious resources. If you are guilty of making more than a few “Butt Calls”, you might consider keeping your phone in a better place. Modern technology sure does have its share of problems.

Now that we are well into the summer season, there are more and more activities coming up for the entire family. We just finished this year’s Water Festival, which brought a lot of folks out to enjoy all that the festival has to offer. Everyone was ready to get out of isolation and have some family fun. Here’s a list of downtown activities for all of us to look forward to:

July 10 – Art on Main/East Alley Unveiling. There will be live music, local art and the special Unveiling of East Alley.
August 13 – Sass in the City. In the past, this has been known as “Ladies Night Out”, but it’s not just for the ladies. There will be all sorts of sales, live music, food and cocktails.
September 5 – Sunday of Labor Day weekend. Harmony Fest 2021. This annual event is an afternoon filled with live music, vendors, food and drinks. The Main Street business section will be blocked off, so bring your folding chairs and the family and enjoy this huge block party.
November 27 – Christmas Around Town. This is the official opening of the holiday season. There will be plenty of holiday festivities and of course, the kids will have the opportunity to meet and greet Santa as he arrives on the North Pole firetruck.
December 31 – Midnight on Main. There isn’t a better place to welcome in the new year than right downtown Three Rivers.
School is out for the summer, which means school children will be spending plenty of time outside playing. At least we hope they will. Unfortunately, there will be a few rainy days over the next couple of months. After all, this is Michigan. During rainy days, it can be difficult finding something that will keep the kids entertained. Here are two things that can be fun after household chores are finished:

A Story Sack: Fill a bag with pictures that have been cut from old magazines. Take turns with your children by picking out images and making up stories about them. You can even tape-record the tales you create.
Let the Games Begin: Turn your living room, garage, or basement into a private Olympics arena and make up your own competitions. Who can hop on one foot for 60 seconds? Good example.
“Late risers! Shave in just 2 minutes flat, kiss your wife, grab your hat. BURMA SHAVE”

See you Out and About!
