A Saginaw man faces two counts of second-degree murder for his role in a May 7 collision that killed an elderly Schoolcraft couple.
Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office has authorized charges against 27-year-old Ezra Phillips. Authorities said he was driving in excess of 100 miles per hour on southbound U.S. 131 when the SUV he was driving struck an eastbound car attempting to cross the highway at West XY Avenue in Schoolcraft Township.
The collision killed 83-year-old Joel Shaffer and his wife, Dolores, 84, officials said.
Authorities said investigators determined Phillips was allegedly driving 115 mph and under the influence when the crash occurred.
Officials said Phillips also faces two counts of operating under the influence while causing death, and two counts of driving with a suspended license and causing death.
Detectives said Phillips had a blood alcohol level of 0.14 percent.
