Out and About – Week of July 12th

Growing up here in Three Rivers, we had four public schools. Each district, or ward as they were called back then, had a public school. The schools were named after someone who had contributed something to the early history of Three Rivers. The schools were Ruth Hoppin, Huss, Andrews, and Barrows. The buildings are still there, but Ruth Hoppin and Andrews are the only schools left that actually have classes during the school year. The other two buildings are still in use and are still in pretty good shape. Huss School, in the Second District, has been used for many worthwhile projects, but is now best known as the home of the Huss Farmers Market. It’s a very popular place to go every Saturday from now until the end of September.

A Children’s Nature Hour is available every Saturday until the end of August, from 10 AM until 11 AM. This hour is dedicated to children ages 3 – 12 years of age, with their adult caregivers. The activities available during this hour include free story telling; art; garden activities; and a nature walk. Please note that space is limited for this activity, so signing up will start at 9 AM. Covid safety is based on the current MDHHS guidelines. There are plenty of other activities available at the market from now until the end of September from 9 AM until 1 PM. The Huss Farmers Market is located at 1008 Eighth Street in Three Rivers. For more information, you are invited to visit their website at

The language you hear these days from young people can be quite offensive. Some adults speak the same language. It seems there are many who just don’t know or care what they say in public. Randy Pausch said it best when he said, “A lot of parents don’t realize the power of their words.”

“Listen shavers knock on wood when offered something just as good.” BURMA SHAVE
