Police pursuit from south of TR into Elkhart County

A Constantine man was arrested last week after leading sheriff’s deputies on a pursuit into Elkhart County.

Sheriff Mark Lillywhite said deputies were called shortly before 11 p.m. June 27 regarding an incident of shots fired.

As deputies responded, they noticed a vehicle coming from the area of the incident. Deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop for an equipment violation. The vehicle, however, took off at a high rate of speed on Constantine Road, near Withers Road, in Florence Township authorities said.

The suspect vehicle crashed into a parked vehicle on U.S. 131 at Withers Road, causing minor injuries to a 41-year-old woman. Lillywhite said the suspect then rammed his vehicle into a patrol car before continuing through Constantine and Mottville townships before entering Elkhart County.

Deputies said the 32-year-old suspect threw numerous items from his vehicle, in an attempt to hit the pursuing patrol vehicles.

The suspect’s vehicle struck a mailbox and drove through a residential yard before crashing into a fence. The suspect fled from the vehicle, running through the yard and into a field but was captured shortly thereafter.

Authorities said the suspect was found to be in possession of methamphetamine.

He was taken to the Elkhart County Jail. Additional charges include possession of meth, receiving and concealing a stolen vehicle, fleeing and eluding, and felonious assault.

  1. Not that this guy doesn’t deserve whatever he gets but “equipment violation” stops are nothing more than “stop and frisk”. It’s just that one of them is illegal.
