St. Joseph County officials appear ready to discontinue the format of virtual meetings.
During their executive committee meeting last week, commissioners agreed to not renew the state of emergency that allows them to meet virtually only. The declaration is set to expire July 5.
While commissioners have been using a hybrid format – in-person and via Zoom – for their twice-a-month board meetings, the commission’s executive committee meetings have been by Zoom only since April 2020.
As a result of their direction Wednesday, commissioners will stage their executive committee and board meetings by in-person format only. The measure will take effect with the commission’s July 14 executive committee meeting.
The measure means all other county-related committee meetings will go back to in-person, as well.
Of course they go back to in person only. It serves them more than the citizens they represent. Once again, back to a status quo that limits the common person’s access and knowledge of the workings and real-time actions of their goverment. Citizens benefit by the hybrid system because it allows access and participation to those unable to travel to meetings. The technology exists. Why not use it?
