Woman injured in Burr Oak Township crash

A Burr Oak woman was treated for minor injuries after the vehicle she was driving was rear-ended last week in Burr Oak Township.

Sheriff Mark Lillywhite said deputies were called around 6:30 a.m. Friday to the intersection of U.S. 12 and Halfway Road in response to a two-vehicle collision.

Investigators said Rebecca Smallwood, 36, was driving west and began slowing her vehicle in advance of turning left onto Halfway Road. Authorities said a 2016 Ford Mustang driven by Richard Scharp Jr., 52, of Manistee, was also heading west but failed to break and struck the rear of Smallwood’s 2014 Jeep Wrangler.

Smallwood was transported to Sturgis Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Scharp Jr. was not injured.

He was cited for speeding and not being able to stop within an assured clear distance. Investigators said seatbelts were worn and alcohol was not a factor in the incident.
