Woman sentenced to probation for embezzling

A Sturgis woman was sentenced to probation and ordered to pay restitution for embezzling more than $180,000 from a Three Rivers real estate company.

Jill Schmidt, 46, will be on probation two years for embezzling more than $183,000 from her former employer, REMAX Elite Group, where she had worked for 14 years. She was sentenced by Circuit Court Judge Paul Stutesman.

Schmidt was manager and controller at the Three Rivers office until October 2017, when she was terminated after questions arose regarding bookkeeping and investigators from Michigan State Police were called to look into the issue.

Court officials said Schmidt had written herself more than $30,000 in checks from the company’s two offices. Company funds were used to pay $35,000 of her credit card expenses, and company credit cards were used to charge at least $95,000 for her use. The company said she wrote more than $22,000 more in bonus checks to herself beyond what she had earned.
