The St. Joe County Fair was not held last year due to Covid-19. It did happen this year with a few changes. Parking was FREE and the admission gates were changed a bit. With Covid still on everyone’s mind, most people took necessary cautions. I did see a lot of patrons wearing masks. It was a little difficult to maintain social distancing, and I’m sure there were many who decided to wait until next year to experience all that a a county fair has to offer.
Opening day, September 19, was a perfect weather-day for opening. Parking was FREE, and I’m sure that did make a difference. It was Family Day and a good day to check out the exhibit barns. The Midway was not open, but some thought it fascinating to watch the rides being assembled. There were plenty of food vendors ready to serve a balanced diet of elephant ears, corn dogs, french fries and lemonade. These vendors did quite well.
I spent four hours everyday driving one of the courtesy carts. A perfect job, especially if you enjoy giving patrons something for FREE. The courtesy carts were restricted to operating on a designated route and could no longer deliver anyone to a specific location, but rather to a stop that was in close proximity. The one thing I noticed was that everyone was grateful for the courtesy cart service and seemed very happy to be able to get Out and About and see the many attractions that a county fair offers. I also noticed that patrons came quite a distance to attend, so they had the opportunity to experience the warm hospitality of St. Joe County.
On a personal note, I’d like to thank all of the directors on the fair board. Some of you are new, but it seemed to me that you put forth the extra effort to make this year’s fair a huge success.
Here a some more of those “Don’ts” concerning dining etiquette:
Don’t eat fast, or gorge. Always take plenty of time. Haste is vulgar.
Don’t fill your mouth with too much food, and don’t masticate audibly. Eat gently and quietly.
Don’t eat vegetables with a spoon. Eat them with a fork. The rule is not to eat anything with a spoon that can be eaten with a fork.
Don’t devour the last mouthful of soup, the last fragment of bread, the last morsel of food. It is not expected that your plate should be sent away cleansed by your gastronomic exertions.
The Stone Cottage Free Store, located at the corner of Bennett and West Streets, in Three Rivers is in need of the following items:
Men’s wear including T-shirts, pants, and shoes.
All types of winter clothing.
Various housewares.
The Free Store is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 AM until noon. They will not accept dirty clothing or items needing major repair. If you wouldn’t wear it or use it, please don’t bring those items in to the store. The store is run by dedicated volunteers. For more information, you may phone the Free Store at (269) 535-2786.
