Robert Evans, MD, 95

Robert Harry Evans, MD, of Sturgis, died in the early hours of Sunday, September 5, 2021, at the age of 95 in Sturgis.
Dr. Evans was born July 1, 1926, in Richmond, Michigan, to Harry and Dorothy Evans.
Following graduation from Armada High School in 1944, Robert proceeded to the University of Notre Dame pre-med program. Upon graduation, Robert was accepted to the University of Michigan Medical School, from which he graduated in 1950.
Dr. Evans was then a surgical resident at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor until July 1951, when he joined the U.S. Naval Medical Corp. and served as a lieutenant junior grade in the Korean War until 1952. During the war, he served in the Beachmaster Unit One on hospital ships and on shore. He remained in the Naval Reserves, including promotions, until 1954 when he was honorably discharged. Following his Naval Reserves discharge, Dr. Evans moved to Sturgis, joining the Michigan Family Practice with Dr. Fiegal and Dr. Braham (Fiegel Braham and Evans), retiring in 1991.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in White Pigeon, the American Medical Society, Michigan State Medical Society, St. Joseph County Medical Society, Sturgis Memorial Hospital, American Academy of Family Practice, and as a delegate to the Michigan State Medical Society.
He married Margaret Patricia (Pat) Straub in 1949, with whom he had four children: Mike, Mark, Jim, and Karen.  Dr. Evans had a deep love of golf and in his spare time could often be found reading and playing cards.
Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia; mother, Dorothy; father, Harry; brother, Charles; sister, Mary Ellen; son, James; and granddaughter, Michelle.
He is survived by: sister, Marjorie Covert; son, Michael (wife, Trudy; daughters Hillary and Jessica (Matt); sons Tory (Holly) and Patrick (Alyssa)); son, Mark (wife, Joy; sons Steven (Louanna) and Scott (Emily)); daughter Karen (husband, Mike Stone; daughters Ashley and Michelle (Paul)); and many great-grandchildren and nephews and nieces.
In accordance with his wishes cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M., Monday, September 13th at the Rosenberg Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 807 E. Chicago Rd. in Sturgis. Private burial of the ashes will take place at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis where full military honors will be conferred by Captain John J. Kelley Post #1355 VFW and the U.S. Navy Honor Guard.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers memorial donations would be appreciated to St. Joseph Catholic Church, 16603 US-12, White Pigeon, MI 49099 or Heart Land Hospice, 8075 Creekside Drive, Portage, MI 49024 or Thurston Woods Endowment Fund, 307 N. Franks Ave., Sturgis, MI 49091.
