St. Joseph River water levels to be lowered at power plant

In order to safely enable Indiana Michigan Power to perform routine work at the Constantine Hydroelectric Plant, the company plans to lower the water level of the St. Joseph River starting Saturday.

The level will remain at the lower level until early October, if weather conditions permit. The water level upstream of the facility will drop six inches Saturday and another six inches Sunday.

Routine maintenance work will begin on Monday and is expected to finish the week of October 11, weather permitting. The water level will be increased to its normal state once the work has been completed.

Company officials said residents two to three miles upstream of the Constantine Hydroelectric Plant may wish to take note of the lower levels and remove watercrafts.

The Constantine Hydroelectric facility is one of six run-of-river hydroelectric plants on the St. Joseph River I&M owns and operates.
