TR firefighter wins pie-eating contest

A representative from Three Rivers Fire brought local publicity to the agency after winning Saturday’s pie-eating contest at the St. Joseph County Grange Fair.

Firefighter/paramedic Travis McGahn downed a 9-inch chocolate pie in under seven minutes to claim first place.

Firefighters on behalf of eight county departments stepped in with the goal of securing the pie-pan trophy for the next 52 weeks.

McGahn said he had never been in a food-eating contest until Saturday. He said there was no strategy other than to keep a focus on the task.

The 2021 contest was the fifth pie-eating event in six years. In the past, its contestants were educators from each of the county’s nine school districts, in addition to representatives from Glen Oaks Community College and the St. Joseph County Intermediate School District.

Event chairman Ron Weston said the availability of teachers this year was a question mark so with those unknowns, he turned to area fire departments for help with the competition.
