County requests funding for storm cleanup

St. Joseph County officials took another step toward potentially securing as much as $500,000 in emergency funds as a result of heavy storms Aug. 11 and 12.

Erin Goff, county emergency services and Homeland Security director, attended Tuesday’s board of commissioners meeting to detail the next steps necessary in a lengthy reimbursement process.

She said Tuesday’s action was more of a formality but necessary to remain in line for financial assistance through what is called Section 19 funding. She said the county on Tuesday needed to adopt a resolution requesting Section 19 funding.

Section 19 funding is earmarked for reimbursement toward cleanup-related expenses incurred by municipal governments, including reimbursement for equipment rental, contracted services, overtime, broken equipment and damage to buildings, for example.

In addition, another part of the process was completed Tuesday when commissioners designated county administrator Teresa Doehring as the agent who will be submitting the application.
