Garland R. Wood, age 83, of Sturgis, passed away Tuesday afternoon, October 19, 2021 at Nu Care Assisted Living in Sturgis.
He was born June 4, 1938 in Dearborn, son of the late Harold and Bessie (Midler) Wood.
Gar resided in Sturgis since 1998 coming from Dearborn Heights.
On February 26, 1977 he married Christyann Zimmer at the Church of the Devine Child in Dearborn.
Most of Gar’s working life was as an engineer in the automotive industry.
He was a member of the Holy Angels Catholic Church in Sturgis, Knights of Columbus-Deacon Jerry Mix Council #2508, Knights of Columbus, Fourth Degree-Father Cornelius Korst General Assembly, Cursillo #67 and served on the board of the Thunderbird Beach Owners Association.
Gar was a talented woodworker and was known by many for his skills and the ability to fix nearly anything. He was always willing to help others with large or small projects. His meticulous approach and completion of any job will be missed by many.
He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife: Christyann; three daughters: Karen (James) Cameron of Southfield, Mary Kathleen (Jeff) Lewis of Alpena and Holly (Mark Crowley) Henson of Londonderry, New Hampshire; seven grandchildren: Benjamin and Max Henson Aiden and Carter Crowley, Kurt and Kara Lewis and James Cameron, II; three great grandchildren; four sisters: Toby Sloan of Livonia, Corliss Senak of Brighton, Sharlene Clark of Westland and Pamela Harpster of Milford; one brother: Mark Wood of Ocala, Florida and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son: Michael Wood; one brother: Pearson Wood and one sister: Beverly Obradovich.
The Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary will be prayed at 10:00 A.M. Monday, Oct. 25th at the Holy Angels Catholic Church in Sturgis. The Funeral Mass celebrating the life of Garland R. Wood will begin at 11:00 A.M. Monday at the church. The Rev. Father Evelio Ramirez and The Rev. Father Raul Gomez celebrants. In accordance with his wishes cremation will follow the Mass. Placement of the ashes in the columbarium of Mount Elliot Cemetery, 1701 Mt Elliott St. in Detroit will take place Wednesday, Oct. 27th at 2:00 P.M.
