Road commission to ask for cleanup reimbursement

St. Joseph County Road Commission Managing Director John Lindsey said the agency has finished tabulating its expenses related to the August storms that hit the area on back-to-back days.

Reporting to county commissioners Tuesday, Lindsey said the road commission’s total number of hours, equipment and overtime labor dedicated to storm-related cleanup was $196,000.

Lindsey said the road commission plans to submit a request for Section 19 reimbursement, a state-funding source available because Gov. Gretchen Whitmer issued a state of emergency declaration for St. Joseph County as a result of the storms.

He said the bulk of overtime related to cleanup occurred within the first five days after the storm. In all, agency workers put in 304 hours of overtime to help with recovery efforts.
