Health department is offering COVID boosters

Based on new recommendations from the CDC, the Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency is now offering all manufacturer’s vaccine booster doses to all residents age 18 and older.

Those who received a Pfizer or Moderna vaccine as their primary vaccine with the second dose administered at least six months ago are eligible for a booster dose. Those who are age 18 and over who received a single dose J&J vaccine as their primary vaccine, at least two months ago, are advised to receive a booster dose.

Agency health officer Rebecca Burns said Michigan is experiencing a surge in COVID cases. The current positivity rate is 26.9 percent in Branch County and 27.3 percent in St. Joseph County.

Burns said area hospitals continue to report that patients who are cared for in the Intensive Care Units are nearly always unvaccinated. There were 13 COVID related deaths in the area from November 10-17 with two in Branch County and four in St. Joseph County during the same period.

The agency’s website is bhsj.org.
