Top local news stories of 2021

Back-to-back storms that devastated portions of St. Joseph County was deemed the top local news story of 2021, according to the Sturgis Journal.

Runner-up was a virtual court hearing that went viral. The case garnered national attention, as the defendant was found to be in the same residence of the suspect accusing him of physical abuse.

Rounding out the top five were the October murder of Colon resident Chelsea Wallen, a shooting in the parking lot at a Constantine little league field, and the return of community festivals and the county fair after their cancellations in 2020.

The sentencing of former prosecutor John McDonough was No. 6, followed by the Pride flag issue at Three Rivers Community Schools, Sturgis’ plan to add a roundabout and the opening of several marijuana-related businesses in the county. No. 10 was the controversy related to the state of the Tasty Nut Shop building in White Pigeon.
