Two weeks paid vacation

A Colon business owner is giving a priceless gift to her 10 employees: two weeks of paid vacation.

Dawn Furney, owner of Dawn’s Café, said the paid time off was part of a deal she made with her staff. Furney said she adopted a four-days-on, three-days-off work schedule and an hourly pay raise. In exchange, Furney modified the restaurant’s hours to close at 2 p.m. instead of 8 p.m. Also, she asked that employees show up to work as scheduled.

As a result, Dawn’s Café is closed this week and next.

She estimates the gift cost her about $10,000, not counting lost revenue from day-to-day operations.

Furney has owned Dawn’s for more than 13 years.
