Icy roads cause multi-car crash

Icy roads were blamed as a factor in a four-vehicle crash earlier this week in Cass County’s Porter Township.

Sheriff Richard Behnke said deputies were called at 10 a.m. Monday to the intersection of U.S. 12 and M-40.

Investigators said 59-year-old Elkhart resident Lloyd Overholt was driving on M-40. Overholt lost control of his vehicle and could not stop due to an ice-covered roadway.

His vehicle slid through the intersection and clipped the rear of a vehicle driven by Kari Scare, 50, of Marcellus. Overholt’s vehicle continued and struck another car, driven by Nelson Hill, 84, of Union. Hill was driving westbound on U.S. 12.

Overholt’s vehicle struck a third car, which was driven by Elkhart resident Thomas Rae, 59.

Hill was transported to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
