Man sentenced in fleeing case

A Sturgis man was sentenced to prison for a situation over the summer in which he was clocked speeding in excess of 100 miles per hour.

John Wales, 26, was ordered to serve as many as five years for the incident.

St. Joseph County Circuit Court Judge Paul Stutesman sentenced Wales earlier this month.

During Wales’ probation check-in on Aug. 20, agent Brandy Schmidt asked sheriff deputies to take Wales into custody after it was confirmed he failed his drug test.

Driving a black sportbike, Wales sped out of Sturgis, into Nottawa and soon after, Mendon. Authorities said Wales did not appear to be concerned about crowds of people in Mendon who had gathered for the village’s Riverfest.

He was eventually arrested and pleaded guilty to fleeing law enforcement.
